In another translation of the Bible, verse five begins
with “reveal your way to the Lord.” This implies the need for confession. A
literal translation of the entire verse reads: “Roll your way onto Jehovah and trust
upon him, and he works.” This suggests the transferring of a heavy load onto much
stronger shoulders.
Whether we commit, reveal, confess, or roll our burden
over to the Lord, he goes to work on
it.
When does he work? When we trust in him. And what is
he working on? Vindication – which is not the same as revenge. In I Peter 2.12,
we are admonished to live such good lives that even when we are accused of
doing wrong, the world will be glorifying God as they proclaim our good deeds. If
we commit our ways to the Lord and do the right thing, some day we will be
proven to be right. This is not a promise of instant gratification – doing the
right thing is usually its own reward and that’s all you get for it. But our
day will come - in spite of our feelings and evidence to the contrary.
What does trust in God look like? Sometimes it looks
like crazy busyness. More often it looks like nothing because to trust God is
to learn to wait.
