Most of us are closest to God when he seems the
farthest away. When trouble comes our way, we turn to God. We need his comfort
and we want him to make our problems go away so we pray a lot. We beg and moan
and demonstrate our belief that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. But a broken
heart is not always a contrite heart.
God
is close to those whose spirits are humbled under his hand; and to those whose
hearts are submissive and obedient to his will.* He is with us when our courage fails and we have lost hope.
Not every broken heart receives the healing touch of the Father’s
hand but when we come to him with penitent hearts, he puts the pieces back
together.
God does not take our troubles lightly. When our
hearts are broken and our spirits are crushed, he is there with us. He feels
our pain and he eases our suffering – even if he doesn’t eliminate the source
of it.
