When
we pray for direction and we don’t receive a clear answer, all we can do is
wait. Being still and waiting are not natural occupations for us. In our
hearts, we may know that we can do nothing to change our circumstances but we
insist on trying. Why can’t we trust God, who always provides and whose timing
is perfect?
So
how do we know if we are waiting or just dilly-dallying? I find that it helps
me to wait more patiently if I make a list – or try to make a list – of all my
options and their possible outcomes. By the time the list is completed, I
realize that waiting is my only option and that it is not the worst use of my
time. I like what this writer has to say: “Have you prayed and prayed, and
waited and waited, and still you see no evidence of an answer? . . . He knows
your needs better than you do. . . . Instead of thinking of waiting as being
wasted time, realize that God is preparing his resources and strengthening you
as well.”*
Waiting
has always brought me closer to God.
