Psalm 37.11  (NIV) But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace.
Matthew 5.5  (NIV)“Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth.”
Just because the meek will inherit the earth doesn’t mean they should be calling dibs on things.*
How long could a person remain meek if he inherited the earth?

Have you ever seen the cartoon, Pinky and the Brain? The Brain is a mad scientist mouse who is always scheming to take over the world. Pinky is his lab assistant who proves the adage, “Good help is hard to find.” When my kids were watching the show, I would wonder: Why would anyone want to take over the world? Who wants that kind of headache?

There's a Sesame Street song that teaches about matching things that go together. It says, “Three of these things belong together. One of these things just isn’t the same.” In today's verses, we find three concepts that don’t belong together: meekness, a rich legacy, and great peace. It is a “what’s wrong with this picture” puzzle in which there is nothing right with the picture. Only Jesus could take these contradictions and make them go together.

David and Jesus weren’t implying that the meek were going to rule the world. The verse in Psalms says that the meek will enjoy great peace, or “delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” If a person lacks meekness, could he even find delight in peace?
The word meek does not mean weak. It means focused.*
