In
this Psalm, David refers to God’s saving power against enemies, but we worship
the only God who can actually save us from ourselves. In David’s day, the
nations around him worshipped an array of gods – one for every day and/or
occasion. The gods of other nations could not save them from anything or for
anything. Why would people bow down and worship an image that clearly does not
move on their behalf? How could they think that a golden calf could represent
someone who has the power to save them?
Today,
we don’t bow down before idols but we devote ourselves to created things that
we think will bring us happiness. Sometimes, owning things does make us happy.
Temporarily. Maybe even for life. But
not forever. In the end, we all die – no matter how many toys we own.
No idol can offer hope. No
other religion has a Savior.
