“Baca”
means tears or weeping, so the Bible scholars are divided over whether the valley
is literal or figurative. Whether it was a real place or just a name in a poem,
the valley symbolizes “any period of loss,
sorrow, grief, deprivation, or disaster,”* that we might face.
In the world of the godless, a person passing
through a “valley of weeping” leaves a depressing trail behind him. But for
those whose strength is in God, the valley becomes an opportunity to draw
closer to God and an invitation for others to come to him.
Wouldn’t
you like to be this kind of person - one whose presence is refreshing? How
wonderful for people to know they have been in God’s presence, to have them
come away praising God without a thought for our ever having been there! Ask
God that you might
“become wells, or fountains, or pools, supplied by refreshing rain, so the
grace of God . . . refreshes and revives the hearts of His people.”*
