This verse refers to activity of God that we might
describe as “fearsome” rather than “awesome.” Our over-usage of the word
“awesome” has drained it of some its power. But even if the psalmist was using
the word as we do today, it still describes God.
The psalmist says, “Come and see . . .” as if to say,
“Let me show you something.” Think about how excited a child can be when he has
discovered something wonderful that he wants to share with you. In this case,
the awesome discovery is the handiwork of God - not just his creation but his
power placed at our disposal.
God’s personal touch is awesome. As the creator and director of the universe, how does
he have time to see to us? He has big things to take care of – keeping the
planets in orbit; making sure the seasons change on time; making the plants
grow. Yet he is never too busy or too important to hear, answer, and arrange
things on our behalf.
We don’t always know what things God has put in motion
in the background of our lives in order to make all things work for our good (Romans
8.28) but sometimes it is so very clear that God’s intervention is the only
explanation for why things happen at just the right time. Praise him for being
the God of perfect timing and amazing organizational skills!
