Job
2.10 (NIV) “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” |
 |
God owes no man anything. . . . Which makes the
fact that he gave us everything even more astounding.* |
 |
We
are eager to accept the good things that God gives us even though we know we
don’t deserve them. If we got what we really
deserve, we wouldn’t be so enthusiastic! We are quick to ask, “Why me?” when
bad things happen but not so much when good comes our way. Do you ever ask God
why he has chosen you to be the recipient of blessings? Do you pray that you
will not be ruined by it? Do you ask that the blessings be used to fulfill
God’s purpose in your life?
Perhaps
you still think life is unfair. How do you think Job felt? Was it fair that God would
brag about him in one breath (Job 1.8) and turn Satan loose on him in the next
(Job 1.12)? There is no indication in scripture that Job ever knew that he was
being used to disarm Satan. From our perspective, we know something that
Job didn’t: God tests his people,
never the ungodly. Tests may be painful and unwelcome but they are acts of
love. As another writer observes: Tests prove our faith.*
While we try to lead lives that are pleasing to God,
we see others who prosper as they live only for themselves. Satan loves it when
we whine about unfairness. If he can get us to blame God for it, he has “struck
a fatal blow to our faith.”*
Are you being tested? Look beyond your trial; look forward to what God has in store for you when you arrive at the end of it.

What
we see as a terrible thing God can use for good.* |
