If the universe is not self-explanatory,* then this verse explains it!
In Acts 17.28,
Paul quotes a contemporary poet who says of God, “For in him we live and move
and have our being.” God is the source of life, breath, movement, and the
essence of our selves. Debate may rage around the question of the origin of
life but sometimes the answers to complex questions are the simplest. Life is
in the hands of God.
Are
we content to let the questions stop there? To pursue the matter may be to go
further than God intends for us to go. What comes next is speculation and
conjecture, leading to what amounts to mythology. God has revealed himself to
us but he remains a mystery (see Job 11.7, 8). Yes, there is a measure of faith
required in accepting God as the final answer but beyond him there is no
rational destination for our minds to arrive at. God is the reason for everything and he is in
control of everything.
I
find that answer to be complete and satisfying.
