The “many” that David refers to are not necessarily
his enemies. These people are not declaring their lack of faith in God’s ability to
deliver David – they merely doubt that God will actually intervene on his behalf. David
is a public figure so the sin in his life is no secret. Their attitude, as
someone has said, “denotes a spirit of malignant triumph.”* We like
to gloat when the mighty are brought low!
When friends and family abandon us, we tend to think
that God has deserted us as well. David, a man after God’s own heart, had
confidence that God had forgiven him. No matter what others thought of him, he was
in good standing with God. David did not live in shame or guilt because he knew
that God restores our ability to look others in the eye – or to look ourselves
in the eye! Not only had David accepted God’s forgiveness but he had forgiven
himself as well.
Are you carrying around a burden of guilt because you
can’t forgive yourself? In II Corinthians 12.9, Paul testifies that God has
proclaimed, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness.” Do you dare to contradict God? He created the universe and sent his
Son to die for you. Do you think he is not powerful and loving enough to
forgive you?
