In
the Old Testament, when a father gave his son a blessing, it wasn’t something
mystical. It was just words; but, as with Jeremiah, they were words empowered
by God. God’s touch on Jeremiah’s mouth provided both “cleansing and enabling.”* From now on, Jeremiah would be
speaking with the authority of God.
We
are timid about witnessing because we don’t know what to say. We forget that
our responsibility is to be an instrument of blessing - not to say just the
right thing. How do we get God’s words in our mouths? His words must first be
in our heads and our hearts. Then we must be willing and we must make ourselves
available. And then, when God is ready to use our lips to speak for him, we
will be ready for his touch. It was a real experience on the part of Jeremiah* and it can be our real
experience as well.
