Philippians 2.14 (NIV)
Do everything without complaining or arguing.
Murmuring is utterly foreign to a servant's true character.*
One night I was grumbling about something as I was preparing for my “quiet time.” I don’t remember what devotion guide I was using but the verse for the day was . . . you guessed it: Philippians 2.14.

I often joke that you have to do something you hate every now and then or you can’t go to heaven. Of course that’s bad theology – sort of. We don’t get to heaven by anything we do, but the next verse goes on to say, “so that you may become blameless and pure children of God without fault.” (Philippians 2.15) I’m not saying that service and suffering are always a package deal but the easy, fun stuff isn’t conducive to the character-building that Paul is talking about.

Complaining and arguing are not Christlike qualities. Anyone who knows Jesus knows that he served and suffered and he didn’t whine about it. He did his Father’s will. If we follow his example, we will find that complaining and arguing give way to joy in serving Jesus!
Cheerful obedience leads to growth in holiness.*
