Genesis 32.10 (NIV)
“I am unworthy of all the
kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant.”

The one who created the universe places
infinite value on you. He considers you a treasure worthy of his personal
attention and sacrifice.*

This
verse is part of Jacob’s prayer when he was in fear of his confrontation with
his twin brother, Esau. Remember how he
cheated his brother out of his inheritance? His prayer may seem a bit
self-serving – as if he is pointing out to God his own gratitude and awareness
of God’s favor, while admitting his own humility (are you really humble if you
say you are?) – but the words are no less valid and beautiful. God’s kindness
and faithfulness are awesome attributes. It is amazing that the God of all
creation would be kind and faithful to a mere servant.
I
know people about whom it could be said, “She has a servant’s heart.” While I
am not one of those people, I do try to be of service to the Kingdom. But just
when I think I am all about the sacrifice, God blesses me and takes away the
sting of sacrifice. It is impossible to
out-give God. The more we give, the
more we get. These are clichés, but they are rich in truth. As someone has written: Over the
years, the church has lost sight of the Lord’s heavenly equation: the one who
loses, gains; the one who gives, gets; and the one who serves like the lowliest
of slaves is the Lord of all.*
How
can I be his servant when he is mine?

 |
We ask (for His blessing) according to His
greatness and not according to our worthiness.*
